It is an effective treatment approach that helps alleviate soft tissue discomfort that may arise from injury, muscular and joint overuse, repetitive strain, and chronic pain.

Our New Hamburg Registered Massage Therapists also have training to provide specialized services such as Hot Stone Massage, Pregnancy, Labour, and Infant Massage, Lymph Drainage Techniques, Trigger Point Therapy, Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial Release, and Hydrotherapy.  See the practitioner profiles for details.

Physiotherapy utilizes various treatment techniques including manual therapy and rehabilitative exercise prescription to help you become more functional in your daily activities.

For more information on Physiotherapy, visit: https://www.nhwc.ca/so_physiotherapy.html

Medical Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a 2000-year-old Chinese treatment in which fine needles are inserted into specific points on the body. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists many different conditions that can legitimately be treated by acupuncture. There are many successful applications of acupuncture for acute and chronic muscle and joint pain.

For more information on Medical Acupuncture, visit: https://www.nhwc.ca/so_acupuncture.html

Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a natural and gentle hands-on therapy that treats the individual as an integrated whole. Its aim is to restore balance and function not only to the joints and to the spine, but also to organs and neurological tissues. These hands-on techniques are performed after years of professional training and clinical practice.

Osteopathy treats many types of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction, and is also good for general maintenance of the body. Treatment techniques may involve elements of soft tissue work, joint mobilizations, cranial sacral therapy, muscle energy, and fascial release. All techniques are relaxing and not painful, making the treatment experience safe and enjoyable.

Laser Therapy
Laser Therapy involves the application of specific wavelengths of laser light to induce a therapeutic effect within the body. The K-Laser has been shown to decrease pain, reduce swelling/inflammation and enhance tissue repair. It does this by increasing microcirculation, allowing more red blood cells with oxygen to reach injured tissues to help with healing. It will also increase venous and lymphatic drainage from the injured region. At the cellular level, it stimulates enzymes which will improve the rate at which energy is made in the cell. More energy in the cell means a quicker healing process.

Custom Orthotics
Custom orthotics correct faulty foot mechanics by normalizing motion and offering shock absorption. Orthotics are mechanical aids that fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole - and they have the advantage of having been custom-made from precise imprints of your feet.

The most effective orthotics are custom-designed devices specifically crafted to meet the needs of the particular individual. Mechanical dysfunction in our feet has the ability to put undue stress on other parts of the body, predisposing us to wear and tear and injury. Prevention and correction is key!  Many people have experienced the benefits of custom orthotics. Let us help you to stay active, mobile, and healthy. If you think custom orthotics may be of benefit to you, book your Advanced Computer Gait and Orthotic Analysis today.

In addition to offering clinical counselling and therapy, this service also provides general social work supports that may include but are not limited to connecting individuals and their families to the most appropriate resources in the community, making referrals for their family members to different/other service providers, as well as general navigation of the social system (for example Ontario Housing, Ontario Works, Ontario Disability, court services just to name a few).

The Chiropractic Patient Experience

By Dr. John A. Papa, DC, FCCPOR(C)

In last week’s article “An Introduction to Chiropractic Care”, we specifically focused on the training and education of chiropractors, regulation of chiropractic, and the scope of chiropractic care.  This article will focus on the chiropractic patient experience written specifically from the author’s perspective of what patients experience at his private practice.  Individual chiropractic experiences may vary in different chiropractic settings dependent on practitioner interests, experience, education, and training.

Chiropractors provide diagnosis, treatment and management of disorders arising from the musculoskeletal system (joints, muscles, tendons, nerves, and bones), such as back pain and neck pain.  Before any treatment is commenced on a prospective chiropractic patient, there are several steps that are taken to ensure the case is one that can be helped with chiropractic care.

First, a thorough Medical History is taken which documents an individual's specific complaint and may also include questions concerning past surgeries and illnesses, medication use, general and family health history.  Second, a Physical Examination is performed consisting of orthopedic, neurological, and range of motion testing.  X-rays may also be ordered to help determine the source of pain or dysfunction.  Third, a Diagnosis and Prognosis is provided to the patient to let them know if their complaint(s) can benefit from chiropractic care.  If the complaint will not benefit from chiropractic care, a referral is made to the appropriate health discipline.

For all complaints that may benefit from chiropractic care, a proposed treatment plan is communicated to the patient, including type of treatment and duration.  Factors taken into consideration when developing a treatment plan for a particular individual include age, sex, severity and duration of complaint, lifestyle and environmental factors, physical health and fitness, medication use, and any other relevant health conditions.  In addition, factors relating to patient concerns and preferences are also taken into account, because patients always have a choice as to the type of care they wish to receive.

Chiropractors are trained to offer multi-modal physical therapy incorporating the use of different techniques commonly employed in combination with each other to decrease pain, stimulate healing, and restore overall function.  Chiropractic adjustments and mobilizations are just one mode of therapy utilized by chiropractors (but not with every patient), to restore normal motion and functioning in joints.  Soft tissue therapy is used to alleviate muscle spasm, decrease scar tissue, and increase pain free ranges of motion.  Electrotherapy involves the application of relaxing therapeutic electrical current or sound waves to the area of injury, dysfunction, or pain (i.e. TENS, interferential current, ultrasound).  Acupuncture can be used to promote healing, decrease pain, and control inflammation.  Rehabilitative exercise prescription may also be used to improve balance, coordination, strength, flexibility, and posture.

Contemporary chiropractic care provides many options for prospective and current patients seeking effective and safe therapy for their musculoskeletal complaints.  Additional chiropractic resources can be found at:  (www.nhwc.ca), (www.chiropractic.on.ca), and (www.ccachiro.org).

This article is a basic summary for educational purposes only.  It is not intended, and should not be considered, as a replacement for consultation, diagnosis or treatment by a duly licensed health practitioner.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT LASER THERAPY

  • Q: Does it hurt? What does a treatment feel like?
    A:
There is little or no sensation during treatment. Occasionally one feels a mild, soothing warmth
or tingling. Areas of pain or inflammation may be sensitive briefly before pain reduction.
  •
  • Q: Are there any side effects or associated risks?
    A:
During more than twenty years of use by healthcare providers all over the world, very few side
effects have ever been reported. Occasionally some old injuries or pain syndromes may feel
aggravated for a few days, as the healing response is more active after treatment.
  •
  • Q: How many treatments does it take?
    A:
This depends on the nature of the condition being treated. For some acute conditions 1 to 6
treatments may be sufficient. Those of a more chronic nature may require 10 to 14 (or more)
treatments. Certain conditions such as severe arthritis may require ongoing periodic care to
    control pain.
  •
  • Q: Can it be used in conjunction with other forms of treatment?
    A:
Yes. Laser Therapy is often used with other forms of treatment, including Rehabilitative Exercise
    and Physical Therapy
, Active Release Therapy (ART), Graston Soft Tissue Therapy, and
Standard Chiropractic Treatments. These other healing modalities are complementary and can
be used with laser to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.
  •
  • Q: Am I covered under my Extended Health Care Plan (EHC) for Laser Therapy?
    A:
Many EHC insurance policies cover chiropractic care. This would also include Laser Therapy
services which would be billed under the chiropractic coverage umbrella.
  •
  • Q: Has effectiveness been demonstrated scientifically?
    A:
Yes. There are thousands of published studies demonstrating the clinical effectiveness of
Laser Therapy. Among these, there are more than one hundred rigorously controlled, scientific
studies that document the effectiveness of laser for many clinical conditions.
