What To Expect At Your Initial Chiropractic Appointment

Here is what you can expect on your first Chiropractic visit.
1️⃣ MEDICAL HISTORY
A thorough medical history is taken which documents your specific concern, duration, location, and severity of symptoms, and relieving and aggravating factors. Additional health information required may include general health questions concerning past episodes of the complaint, past surgeries and illnesses, medication use, family history of illness, systems review and a review of general health status. 📝
2️⃣ PHYSICAL EXAMINATION
Standard physical, postural, palpatory, orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic tests are performed to determine the cause(s) of your problem. X-rays may also be ordered to help formulate a diagnosis. 🩺
3️⃣ DIAGNOSIS AND PROGNOSIS
The doctor will communicate a diagnosis and prognosis, and let you know if your complaint is one that can benefit from chiropractic care. In the event that the complaint will not benefit from chiropractic care, a referral will be made to the appropriate health care discipline. 👩‍⚕️
4️⃣ TREATMENT
For all complaints that may benefit from chiropractic care, a proposed treatment plan is communicated, including type of treatment and duration. Factors taken into consideration when developing a treatment plan include age, sex, severity and duration of complaint, genetics, lifestyle and environmental factors, physical health and fitness, and any other co-conditions. In addition, factors relating to patient concerns and preferences are also taken into account, because patients always have a choice as to the type of care they wish to receive. Any proposed treatment plan requires a signed informed consent by the patient. ✅

How Can Chiropractors Help With Headaches?

Being able to think clearly and calmly allows us to make decisions, process emotions, and carry on with our day-to-day lives. That clarity can be easily destroyed with a strong headache. Many people have occasional headaches, but frequent headaches that affect your ability to sleep or get on with your day can be disabling.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF HEADACHES

Common types of headaches are tension, migraine, and cervicogenic headaches.

Tension-type headaches commonly present as band-like tension around the head, whereas migraine headaches usually result in pain on one side of the head and are commonly accompanied by nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.

With cervicogenic headaches, the neck is the source of the problem but the pain is perceived in one or more areas of the head and/or face. The causes of headaches are not always well understood but a family history of headaches, neck stiffness, and stress are common factors.

HOW CAN CHIROPRACTORS HELP WITH HEADACHES?

Chiropractors can assess, diagnose, and manage headaches. Evidence suggests that chiropractic care, including manual therapy, can be effective in treating cervicogenic and tension headaches. Studies have also shown that chiropractic care can help decrease the intensity and frequency of migraines.

The treatment options may include:

  • Manual therapy
  • Soft tissue therapy
  • Modalities including electrical stimulation, acupuncture, and ultrasound
  • Rehabilitation
  • Lifestyle changes and education
  • Referral and co-management

It’s important to take headaches seriously. Consider consulting a chiropractor if you often have headaches, if you frequently take a pain reliever for your headaches, if your headache pattern changes, or if your headaches are getting worse. Seek prompt attention if your headache is sudden and severe, follows a head injury, or is accompanied by fever, stiff neck, weakness, numbness, or difficulty speaking.
